In
the `98 NASCAR Winston Cup season, Bobby Labonte met most of his goals. For
the first time in two years, Labonte won two races-neither of which was the
season finale at Atlanta. He had a runner-up finish to Dale Earnhardt in
the Daytona 500, better performance on the flat tracks, and, as usual, great
finishes on the superspeedways. But he didn’t finish in the top five in the
points, which probably happened because of 6 DNFs-the most that any driver
in the top ten in points had. Still, his sixth-place position in the points
made him the highest finishing Pontiac and single-car team driver. But the
single-car part will change next year with the addition of Tony Stewart to
Joe Gibbs Racing.
In 1998, Bobby Labonte had two victories-the PRIMESTAR 500 and
DieHard 500-11 Top-5s, and 18 Top 10s, which added up to 4,180 points. He
had three poles-all of which were at restrictor-plate tracks. He earned
$2,648,970 in earnings. His average starting position was 12.58 and his
average finishing position was 14.21. He lead 181 laps and completed 9,512
laps of the total laps run this season.
