Dale Jarrett won the race and a $1,000,000 bonus for finishing in the top five in the previous No
Bull 5 race-the Southern 500 at Darlington. This win got the #88 crew out of a slump
they had recently been stuck in.
DJ beat second-place Jeff Gordon to the line by mere fractions of a second. Gordon was followed by
teammate Terry Labonte who drafted with Gordon almost the whole day. Jimmy Spencer and Jeremy Mayfield,
who recently became a blond, round out the drivers who will be eligible for next-year's No Bull 5 at
Daytona.
Bobby Labonte, the brother of second-place finisher Terry Labonte, got diced
back to the sixth position after seeing the white flag in second position. Mike
Skinner, who led the most laps and drafted with race-winner Dale Jarrett most of the
race, finished seventh. Dale Earnhardt, who got caught up in the big wreck that normally
happens at restrictor-plate races, fixed his damage and ran in the top five only to have
rear-end trouble. After getting caught up in the big wreck, Mark Martin
finished thirty-fourth and is now 288 points behind Jeff Gordon. Ernie Irvan
had to go to the hospital to be examined after being in the middle of the
wreck.
