Rusty Wallace Fastest in Happy Hour Practice for the MBNA Gold 400
Rusty Wallace Faster than Pole-Sitter Martin
Rusty Wallace's lap of 151.381 MPH (23.781 seconds) was the fastest in Happy Hour. However, nobody's time was their quickest time of the week. Defending race champion Mark Martin was second fastest, only a hundredth of a second slower than Wallace. Kyle Petty, whose last win came at Dover in June 1995, was third fastest (150.937 MPH, 23.851 seconds). Jeff Gordon was sixth fastest-the same position he qualified in. Ricky Rudd, trying to continue his streak of at least one win in a season, was eighth fastest. Matt Kenseth, the
winner of the MBNA 200 who is filling in for Bill Elliott whose father died, was twentieth fastest. Derrike Cope and Kevin Lepage had terrible speeds-thirty-fourth and thirty-eighth fastest-after having good qualifying runs. Terry Labonte and Dale Earnhardt will both start their 600th NASCAR race Sunday, but were only thirty-second and thirty-ninth fastest.
